Who Was Cantinflas, Today’s Google Doodle?

The career of the beloved Mexican comedic actor is celebrated by Google on what would have been his 107th birthday.

Mexico’s beloved comedic actor Cantinflas is the Google Doodle on what would have been the film star’s 107th birthday (Aug. 12).

Mario Moreno Reyes, born in 1911, started out singing and dancing for change on the streets of Mexico City. He had an early career as a boxer and in the circus before adopting the stage name Catinflas and finding fame on the big screen.

Cantinflas won over audiences with his comedic portrayal of a man who started life in the slums. He never forgot his own beginnings, and was known in his later years as a philanthropist who once underwrote housing costs for more than 250 low income families in Mexico City.

Charlie Chaplin, to whom he was often compared, reportedly once hailed Cantinflas as the “greatest comedian alive.”

Today’s Google Doodle celebrates Cantinflas’ life with illustrations of the actor in some of his films — Ahí está el detalle (1940), El Siete Machos (1951), El patruello 777 (1978) and El barrendero (1981).
